Gujarat bridge accident: Don’t be clever, answer the questions, the High Court has given a class to the top officials on the Morbi bridge accident

AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat High Court has criticized the method of awarding the bridge repair contract. During the hearing, Chief Justice Arvind Kumar asked the state’s top bureaucrat and chief secretary why the tender for the repair work of the public bridge was not issued. Why were the bids not called? The court added that how the contract for such an important work was completed in just one and a half pages? Was the state’s bounty given to the Ajanta Company without any tender?”
The court, taking notice of itself, had sought response from 6 departments. Chief Justice Arvind Kumar and Justice Ashutosh Jaishastri are hearing the matter. Let us tell you that the Morbi Municipality awarded a 15-year contract to the Aureva Group, known for the Ajanta brand of watches.
On October 30, more than 130 people lost their lives when a British-era bridge collapsed over the Machu river in Morbi, Gujarat. On October 31, police arrested nine people, including four from the Oriva Group, which manages the Morbi Bridge. A case has been registered against the companies involved in the maintenance and operation of the bridge.
On the other hand, the High Court had on November 7 said that it had taken suo motu notice of a news report on the bridge collapse and registered it as a PIL. “Respondents one and two (Chief Secretary and Home Secretary) will file a status report by next Monday. The State Human Rights Commission will file a report in this regard by the next date of hearing,” the court said in its order.
