Gujrat: MLA who called the criminals of Balquis Banu “sanskari” has been nominated by BJP from Godhra

New Delhi: The BJP leader who called the rapists of Bilqis Banu as Sanskari Brahmins has been given a ticket for the assembly elections in Gujarat next month. Former Gujarat Minister Chandrasingh Rawalji has been made the BJP candidate from Godhra. He is a six-time MLA from Godhra. Chandrasingh left the Congress and joined the BJP in August 2017 before the last Gujarat elections. He was part of the Gujarat government committee that gave a unanimous verdict in favor of the release of 11 convicts for the rape of Balquis Bano and the murder of nine members of her family.
Raoulji was heard to say in an interview, “They are Brahmins and Brahmins are known for their good morals. Maybe someone had an ulterior motive to punish them.” Chandra Singh also said that the behavior of the prisoners in the jail was good. Notably, the convicts in the Bilqis case were released on Independence Day (August 15) and were welcomed by a right-wing group with flowers and sweets.
The Gujarat government had approved the release of these people under its amnesty policy. A special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court in Mumbai on 21 January 2008 sentenced 11 convicts to life imprisonment for the gang-rape of Bilquis Bano and the murder of seven members of her family. His conviction was later upheld by the Bombay High Court.
Raoulji’s statement was strongly condemned by various parties. Y Satish Reddy, convenor of the ruling TRS in Telangana shared a video clip saying, “He is a Brahmin, a man of good values. His behavior in jail was good”: BJP MLA Rawal G. ….. BJP now preaches rapist ‘good manners’. This is the lowest level of a party.”
